In a recent announcement from Salem, Oregon, Governor Tina Kotek has appointed her chief of staff, Chris Warner, as the interim director of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). This decision comes as the department has been without a permanent director for five months. Warner will assume his new role at the end of June, following Lisa Sumption’s interim leadership. Sumption, who is the director of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, stepped in after the departure of former ODOT director Kris Strickler earlier this year.
Leadership Transition
Chris Warner’s appointment marks a continued period of transition for ODOT as the state conducts a “robust national search” for a permanent director. Governor Kotek expressed her gratitude to both Warner and Sumption for their willingness to serve the people of Oregon, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe and reliable transportation system. “Their efforts allow the state to take the steps needed to find the best director for Oregon’s transportation future,” Kotek stated.
Warner brings a wealth of experience in transportation to his new role. Before joining Governor Kotek’s administration as deputy chief of staff in 2023, he served as the director of the Portland Bureau of Transportation. His background also includes roles as a legislative assistant to former Congressman Peter DeFazio and as a transportation advisor to former Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski.
New Chief of Staff
As Warner transitions to his new position, Emerald Bogue will replace him as chief of staff. Bogue has been a special advisor to the governor’s office from the Port of Portland and has extensive experience in government affairs and policy leadership. Her background includes work with Multnomah County, the city of Portland, and the SEIU.
Governor Kotek’s office highlighted Warner’s significant contributions to addressing some of the state’s pressing issues during his tenure. “Chris has the experience needed to keep the organization moving at this truly critical juncture,” Kotek added, expressing her full confidence in Warner’s capabilities.
