Toledo Public Schools Hosts Bus Driver Recruitment Event Amid Shortage

Toledo Public Schools is taking proactive steps to address the ongoing shortage of school bus drivers by hosting a recruitment event. The event is scheduled for Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the TPS Transportation Garage, located at 5600 Hill Ave. This initiative provides job seekers with the opportunity to test drive a school bus and participate in interviews for available positions.

Requirements and Benefits

Applicants interested in attending the event are not required to register in advance but should bring their driver’s license and Social Security card. To be eligible, candidates must be at least 21 years old, have held a driver’s license for a minimum of two years, maintain a clean driving record with no DUIs in the past decade, and have no license suspensions in the past three years. Additionally, passing a background check is mandatory due to the nature of working with children.

The district offers several attractive benefits to new hires, including paid training, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, a pension plan, eight-hour workdays, and paid vacation time. These incentives are part of the district’s efforts to make the position more appealing and to retain drivers once hired.

Addressing the Driver Shortage

Since the pandemic, Toledo Public Schools, like many districts nationwide, has faced significant challenges in filling bus driver positions. According to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, the shortage is partly due to the time and financial investment required to obtain a commercial driver’s license and complete necessary training.

This shortage has led to delayed or canceled bus routes, which in turn has increased student absenteeism and negatively impacted learning outcomes. In response, TPS and other districts have increased driver pay and enhanced benefits. State officials have also launched initiatives to support districts in recruiting and retaining drivers.
