Discoveryland Swap Meet Runs Seven Days a Week

The old Redwood Drive-In property on Redwood Road has been hosting open-air market activity for years, and on any given weekend morning you can find a few hundred vendors spread across the asphalt selling everything from used power tools and baby clothes to handmade tamales and refurbished furniture. This is not a curated artisan market. It is a flea market in the plainest sense, and that is exactly the point.

The layout is loose. Vendors claim spots early — some regulars show up before 6 a.m. to set up — and by 8 or 9 on a Saturday the rows are full and foot traffic picks up fast. Most of the permanent vendors are along the interior lanes; the outer edges tend to be more casual sellers cleaning out garages or testing whether a side hustle has legs. You can walk the whole thing in under an hour, but most people don’t because they stop too often.

What you’ll actually find depends on the week. Automotive parts and accessories are consistently well-represented, as are phone case vendors, secondhand clothing by the pound, and a rotating cast of food stalls. The food situation is genuinely good. Several vendors sell fresh fruit cups with chamoy and Tajín, and at least one or two spots are grilling meat for tacos or burritos by mid-morning. Bring cash — most vendors don’t take cards, and the ones who do sometimes have spotty signal.

Prices are what you’d expect from a flea market operating on low overhead. Clothing items run anywhere from $1 to $15. Tools and hardware are negotiable. Produce, when it’s there, is priced well below grocery store rates. Nobody is going to pressure you, and nobody expects you to buy anything just for looking. Haggling is normal on big-ticket items; don’t bother trying to talk down a $2 shirt.

The crowd skews heavily Latino on weekends, and that shapes the whole atmosphere — the music playing from vendor setups, the food, the general energy. Families come together, kids in tow. It’s a social outing as much as a shopping trip for a lot of the regulars. If you’ve spent time in similar markets in LA or Houston, this will feel familiar. If you haven’t, it can feel a little chaotic at first and then completely normal within twenty minutes.

Getting there is straightforward. The site sits on Redwood Road in the 3000-4000 block, easy to spot on weekends from the car traffic and the rows of canopy tents visible from the street. Parking is on-site and free. Weekdays are slower and not every vendor shows up, so Saturday and Sunday mornings are the right call if you want the full version of this place. Plan for 8 a.m. to noon as the prime window — vendors start packing up in early afternoon, and the food options thin out.

Admission is free. Bring a bag, bring cash, and don’t expect to find anything specific. The people who get the most out of a place like this are the ones with no fixed agenda, just willing to see what’s there.
