MadeWest Brewing Co. opened on Telephone Road in 2016, and it has quietly become one of the more reliable places to spend a few hours in Ventura without feeling like you’re doing something calculated.
The taproom sits in an industrial stretch of the city — not the harbor, not Main Street — and that’s part of why it works. You’re not competing with tourists for a bar stool. The space is wide open, with high ceilings, picnic tables, and a lot of natural light. Dogs are welcome on the patio. Kids, too, in the earlier hours. It has the feel of a neighborhood spot that happens to make excellent beer, which is more or less exactly what it is.
I’ve been going for a few years now, usually on a weekend afternoon when I want somewhere that doesn’t require a plan. The beer list rotates, but there are usually fifteen or so taps going. The West Coast IPAs are the thing to try first — MadeWest leans into the style cleanly, with good bitterness and none of the murky, overcomplicated haze that’s become a crutch elsewhere. Their pale ales are equally solid. If you’re not a hop person, they typically have a lager or a lighter option on, though this isn’t primarily a craft lager destination.
Pints run around seven to nine dollars depending on style and ABV. You can also get flights, which is worth doing the first time so you can figure out what you like before committing to a full pour. There’s no kitchen, but they bring in food trucks on weekends — check their Instagram before you go because the lineup changes. I’ve eaten tacos out there more than once and had no complaints.
What I appreciate most is how unhurried the whole place feels. Nobody is rushing you. The staff knows the beers and will talk through them if you ask, but they don’t push. There’s usually music, usually at a volume where you can still have an actual conversation, which sounds like a low bar but isn’t.
The location — 1744 Telephone Road — means you’re a five-minute drive from downtown or the harbor, but it feels removed from both in the best way. Parking is easy, which in Ventura proper is not always a given. There’s good signage once you’re on the block, though the surrounding area is pretty nondescript industrial, so don’t let the approach throw you.
If you go on a weekday afternoon, it’s often nearly empty — peaceful in a way I find more appealing than atmospheric. Weekend afternoons bring more of a crowd, but it rarely feels packed or loud in a way that makes you want to leave. Saturday early evening is probably the sweet spot if you want some energy without the wait.
They also do cans to go, which is worth knowing if you’re heading to the beach or cooking dinner somewhere. The canned IPAs are consistent and packaged well.
MadeWest isn’t making headlines or collecting awards in a flashy way. It just shows up every week with good beer and an easy vibe, which is honestly all I’m looking for most of the time.
