Lake Worth homeowner loses $4,625 deposit after contractor vanishes

Lake Worth, Fla. – A local homeowner was left out of pocket after a contractor he hired through Facebook Marketplace took a $4,625 deposit and failed to begin the promised construction. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) says the suspect has been arrested and charged with theft involving a victim age 65 or older.

How the scam unfolded

According to a probable‑cause affidavit, 72‑year‑old Carlos Boudet contracted with 37‑year‑old Yandy Cuellar Cordero to add onto a shed and replace its roof at Boudet’s Lake Worth property. The parties agreed on a total price of $9,250. Cuellar Cordero requested a 50 % deposit, which Boudet paid by personal check. The check was cashed shortly after, but no construction materials were delivered and no work began.

Attempts to recover the money

Boudet tried repeatedly to contact the contractor. When those efforts failed, he sent a certified demand letter seeking a refund. The affidavit states that Cuellar Cordero never responded, and Boudet never received his money back.

Law‑enforcement response

PBSO investigators gathered contracts, banking records and surveillance footage. A photo lineup later identified Cuellar Cordero as the individual Boudet hired. Records from PNC Bank linked the suspect to the deposit check transaction.

Detectives concluded there was probable cause to charge Cuellar Cordero with theft involving a victim age 65 or older. He was arrested on Oct. 5 and released on bond. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the sheriff’s office.

Protecting consumers

This case underscores the importance of due diligence when hiring contractors, especially through online marketplaces. Residents are advised to verify licenses, request written contracts, and avoid large upfront cash payments. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office continues to monitor similar complaints and encourages the community to report suspicious activity.
