Experience Sand Surfing at Wyoming’s Killpecker Sand Dunes

Wyoming may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of surfing, but the Killpecker Sand Dunes in Sweetwater County offer a unique twist on the sport. Located in the Red Desert, just north of Rock Springs, these dunes provide an exciting opportunity for sand surfing enthusiasts.

Exploring the Killpecker Sand Dunes

The Killpecker Sand Dunes span an impressive 109,000 acres, making it the second-largest active sand dune field in the world. With dunes reaching up to 100 feet in height, it’s a perfect spot for sandboarding and sand sledding. The Open Play Area is accessible via the Tri-territory Road, about 12 miles north of Rock Springs, off U.S. Highway 191.

Visitors can rent sandboards and sleds from the Explore Rock Springs & Green River Visitor Center, which also provides board wax and safety flags. Equipment rental typically costs around $209. It’s important to wear sturdy shoes or boots, bring plenty of water, and frequently apply wax to your board to maintain speed on the sand.

When to Visit and What to Expect

The best times to visit are early spring or fall, when temperatures are more moderate. The sand can become extremely hot during the summer months. The Red Desert, where the dunes are located, is a vast high-desert ecosystem known for its sweeping badlands, migrating sand dunes, and abundant wildlife.

For those looking to explore further, the area offers additional attractions such as the Black Butte, an 8,097-foot landmark, and the Boar’s Tusk, a striking volcanic neck. The White Mountain Petroglyphs Site, featuring rock art panels important to Native American tribes, is also nearby and worth a visit.

While the adventure of sand surfing is thrilling, visitors should be prepared for the remote nature of the area. The backroads can be primitive, and a high-clearance 4WD vehicle is recommended. Cell service is limited, so a paper map is advisable.

Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor, the Killpecker Sand Dunes offer a unique and exhilarating way to experience the natural beauty of Wyoming’s Red Desert.
