EU Committee Supports Deal to Prevent US Trade Tariffs

The European Parliament’s trade committee has taken a significant step to prevent a potential trade conflict with the United States by voting to remove import duties on a range of U.S. goods. This move is part of a trade agreement reached last year at President Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. The agreement requires the EU to eliminate duties on U.S. industrial goods and provide preferential access to U.S. farm and seafood products, while the U.S. maintains a 15% tariff on most EU goods.

Trade Agreement Details

The deal, which was agreed upon ten months ago, has faced delays in implementation on the EU side, prompting President Trump to threaten higher tariffs if the EU does not fulfill its commitments by July 4. The committee’s vote, with 31 in favor, six against, and three abstentions, signals strong support for the legislation, which will now move to the full EU assembly for approval in mid-June.

The agreement is crucial for maintaining stability in the world’s largest trading relationship, which involves an annual exchange of $2 trillion in goods and services. Despite the trade tensions, the U.S. aims to reduce its goods trade deficit with the EU, which exceeds $200 billion.

Concerns and Amendments

Some EU lawmakers have expressed concerns about the deal and President Trump’s tariff threats. They have introduced amendments to suspend concessions if the U.S. does not adhere to the agreement and to terminate the deal by the end of 2029 unless renewed by new legislation. The Trump administration is reviewing these amendments to ensure they comply with the original deal.

The committee’s decision to continue zero duties for U.S. lobsters, initially agreed upon in 2020, is another aspect of the trade negotiations. As the full EU assembly prepares to vote, the outcome will be closely watched by both sides of the Atlantic, as it could influence future trade relations between the EU and the U.S.
