Startups Innovate to Strengthen Ukraine’s Defense with Drones and Robotics

In a bid to counter Russian drone threats over the Black Sea, Ukrainian startups are stepping up with innovative defense solutions. Charles Maher, a former U.S. submarine commander, has founded BlueShadow, a maritime intelligence company, to develop autonomous naval vessels that will form a protective barrier off Ukraine’s coast. These vessels, equipped with missiles and interceptor drones, are expected to be operational by early 2027.

Private Sector Support

BlueShadow is among several startups collaborating with Defence Builder, a private-sector accelerator that provides funding and mentorship to defense technology startups. Defence Builder offers initial funding and a four-month acceleration program to help these companies attract investors and military support. The accelerator takes a small stake in the startups, while the military gains access to potentially low-cost defense solutions.

Line Rindvig, CEO of Defence Builder, emphasized the dual purpose of business and national defense, stating, “Business is business, but we also all serve a bigger purpose.” The Ukrainian Council of Defense Industries Investor Club, comprising around 25 institutions, has significantly increased defense investments in Ukraine, from $1.1 million in 2023 to $105 million last year.

Focus on Land Drones

Remote-controlled vehicles are a priority for Defence Builder, especially in the “Kill Zone” near the front lines. Telearmy, an Estonian startup, has been deploying remote-controlled systems in trucks since 2023, allowing them to operate from a safe distance. Founder Enn Laansoo highlighted the importance of keeping soldiers out of harm’s way by adapting vehicles for remote operation.

Additionally, Ukraine’s military has been utilizing “mid strike” drones to target Russian logistics and defenses. Wingtech, another startup, has developed the Haba, a reusable fixed-wing bomber resistant to jamming, which has been operational for over a year. With financial backing from an established Ukrainian defense manufacturer, Wingtech aims to increase production to meet military demand.
