Manitowoc man waives preliminary hearing in child sexual assault case

MANITOWOC, Wis. – Trenten Ploederl, 27, of Manitowoc, has agreed to waive a preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 22 in a case that alleges he provided a runaway teen a place to stay in exchange for sexual acts. The decision was announced during a hearing on Thursday, allowing the court to move more quickly toward trial on the most serious charge.

Charges and alleged conduct

The indictment, filed in 2022, lists multiple counts against Ploederl, including sexual exploitation of a child, trafficking a child, second‑degree sexual assault and third‑degree sexual assault. Prosecutors also allege that he forced the victim, identified only as “CHILD” in the complaint, to remain in his home by threatening to deny her shelter if she refused sexual activity.

According to the complaint, the victim initially described the relationship as “normal,” but said Ploederl repeatedly attempted physical acts that she denied. She later recounted that over the next one to two weeks, “there would have been numerous sexual contacts between the two.”

Additional pending cases

Ploederl is already bound over for trial on one count of first‑degree sexual assault involving a six‑year‑old. A status conference for that matter is set for Nov. 20. Beyond the Manitowoc case, he faces at least 15 other active criminal matters, including more than 80 bail‑jumping charges.

During Thursday’s hearing, Det. Eric Schultz testified, and the court accepted the defendant’s request to waive the preliminary hearing. The waiver means the case will proceed directly to a pre‑trial conference, where issues such as discovery and potential plea negotiations will be addressed.

Community response

Local officials and community leaders have expressed concern over the severity of the allegations and the broader pattern of alleged offenses. While the legal process continues, the Manitowoc Police Department urges anyone with information about related incidents to contact them.

The case underscores ongoing challenges in addressing child sexual exploitation and trafficking within the community. Law‑enforcement agencies emphasize the importance of early intervention and support for vulnerable youth, urging families and schools to remain vigilant.

Next steps

The court will set dates for further proceedings after the Nov. 20 status conference. If convicted on any of the charges, Ploederl could face significant prison time, reflecting the seriousness with which Wisconsin courts treat offenses involving minors.

Residents are reminded that resources for victims of sexual assault are available through local counseling services and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
