Surin of Thailand Earns Its Regulars One Bowl at a Time

People who live near University Boulevard have probably driven past Surin of Thailand a hundred times without stopping. That was me for about two years. Then a colleague who grew up in Bangkok told me, bluntly, that it was the best Thai food within an hour of Tuscaloosa. I went that weekend and haven’t really stopped going since.

Surin sits on the stretch of University Boulevard that runs between campus and the interstate, in a low-key strip that doesn’t exactly demand your attention. Inside, the room is small and calm — maybe a dozen tables, dim enough to feel unhurried, with a staff that moves efficiently without being pushy. You order at the counter when you walk in, grab a number, and find a seat. It’s not fancy. That’s fine. The food is the whole point.

The pad thai is technically excellent — good wok heat, not gluey, with just enough sweetness — but I’d actually steer a first-timer toward the drunken noodles. Wide rice noodles, Thai basil, your choice of protein, a solid hit of chile heat. Ask for medium spice unless you genuinely want to sweat through your shirt; they don’t mess around with the heat levels. The green curry is also worth your time: creamy, fragrant, with enough lemongrass coming through that it tastes like something made carefully rather than ladled out of a tub.

One dish I keep coming back to is the pad see ew. It’s simple — wide noodles, Chinese broccoli, egg, a little sweetness from the soy — but it’s the kind of dish that separates a kitchen that knows what it’s doing from one that doesn’t. At Surin, it lands right every single time.

Spring rolls here are legitimately good and worth ordering as a starter. The soup menu is smaller but solid; I’ve had the tom kha on a cold January afternoon and felt immediately better about my life. Portions are generous without being absurd. A full lunch — entree, spring rolls, a Thai iced tea — usually runs me somewhere around fifteen to eighteen dollars, which is hard to argue with.

Lunch service during the week draws a mix of students, faculty, and people from the surrounding neighborhoods who clearly have standing orders. The pace is quick enough that you’re in and out in forty minutes if you need to be, but nobody’s rushing you. Dinner is a little quieter and a good bit more relaxed — a better choice if you want to sit and talk. Parking is straightforward; there’s a lot right out front.

Weekday lunch is my favorite time to go, particularly Tuesday or Wednesday when it’s busy enough to feel lively but not so packed that there’s a wait. Friday lunch can get crowded with students, so build in a few extra minutes if that’s when you’re going.

There are other Thai spots in the Tuscaloosa area, and I’m not saying they’re bad. But Surin has been consistent for years in a way that earns real loyalty. The fact that it doesn’t feel the need to dress itself up or market itself aggressively is, honestly, part of why regulars trust it. Go once and you’ll understand why that colleague’s recommendation stuck with me.
