Lawrence University Recognizes Turning Point USA Chapter

In Appleton, Wisconsin, Lawrence University has officially recognized the Patriots of Faith, a chapter of Turning Point USA, following a contentious approval process. This decision marks a significant moment for the conservative student group, which faced considerable opposition on campus.

Overcoming Challenges

The journey to recognition was not without hurdles. Earlier this year, a student referendum aimed at blocking the chapter’s approval failed to gather enough support, allowing the process to move forward. Lawrence University President Laurie Carter clarified that the decision rested solely with the Lawrence University Community Council, a student-led body, emphasizing that faculty and staff were not involved in the decision-making.

Patriots of Faith chapter president Zach Currier expressed surprise and relief at the official recognition. “To see the backlash that we got and to see what we had to go through to get our foot in the door to begin with, I honestly thought we would not come as far as we have. Luckily, we’ve come together. We’ve stuck it through,” he said.

Looking Ahead

With official recognition, the Patriots of Faith can now request university funding and establish a more prominent presence on campus. Currier emphasized the group’s commitment to fostering dialogue and community engagement. “We’re going to establish a relationship with our Lawrence community, with our peers. Get those conversations going, get that community outreach going. Establish our presence on campus,” he stated.

As Currier prepares to graduate in November, he remains optimistic about the future of the Patriots of Faith. “Amongst the group, we’re excited to see what this next chapter holds with the upcoming leadership,” he added.

Lawrence University released a statement affirming its commitment to free speech and the open exchange of ideas, highlighting the importance of respectful dialogue and the student-led governance process that led to the chapter’s approval.
