Wisconsin Launches WisTRAIN Program for Advanced Manufacturing and AI

Wisconsin is taking significant steps to prepare its workforce for the future with the introduction of the WisTRAIN program. Announced by Governor Tony Evers, this initiative is designed to provide job training in advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI), ensuring that the state’s workforce is ready to meet the demands of a rapidly changing economy.

Federal Support for Workforce Development

During his 2026 State of the State address, Gov. Evers highlighted that Wisconsin has secured over $7 million in federal funding to support these workforce training programs. This funding comes from the Industry-Driven Skills Training Fund grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor, making Wisconsin one of 14 states to receive such support.

The WisTRAIN program is part of a broader effort by the Evers Administration to build a 21st-century workforce. It builds on the success of the Workforce Solutions Initiative, which has already served over 127,000 Wisconsinites by supporting local and regional workforce training programs.

Focus on Emerging Industries

The program aims to address the skills gap in high-demand and emerging industries such as data analytics, cybersecurity, and robotics. The development of WisTRAIN aligns with recommendations from the Governor’s Task Force on Workforce and Artificial Intelligence, established in 2023 to explore how AI will transform various sectors of the state economy.

WisTRAIN offers funding for worker training programs, including apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship opportunities, to equip Wisconsin’s workforce with the necessary skills. The program is open to employers of all sizes operating within the state, with applications for the initial funding round due by July 13, 2026.

Continued Commitment to Workforce Development

Gov. Evers has emphasized Wisconsin’s unique position to leverage the potential of AI and advanced manufacturing sectors. In 2023, he signed Executive Order #211, creating the Governor’s Task Force on Workforce and Artificial Intelligence to develop an action plan for ethical decision-making and equitable access to AI technology and training.

These efforts are part of a long-term strategy to address workforce challenges and promote economic opportunity across Wisconsin. The state has seen record-high enrollment in its Youth Apprenticeship program, reflecting a growing commitment to preparing young people for future careers.
