Tragic Drowning and Near-Drowning Incidents in Sequoyah County

In a somber weekend for Sequoyah County, Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to two separate water-related incidents, one resulting in a fatality and the other a near-drowning. The incidents highlight the importance of water safety and the use of flotation devices.

Fatal Drowning at Brushy Lake Park

On Sunday, 87-year-old Julio Yracheta from Sallisaw tragically drowned at Brushy Lake Park, located seven miles north of Sallisaw. The circumstances surrounding his drowning are still under investigation, but it has been confirmed that he was not wearing a flotation device at the time of the incident. Authorities have notified his next of kin as they continue to look into the details of the event.

Near-Drowning at Kerr Reservoir

In a separate incident on Saturday at Kerr Reservoir, also in Sequoyah County, a 47-year-old man suffered a near-drowning after a fall. The man reportedly fell and hit his head on another boat, which rendered him unconscious and caused him to fall face down into the water. Like the previous incident, the victim was not using a flotation device, which could have potentially prevented the near-tragic outcome.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with water activities, especially for those not utilizing proper safety equipment. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol continues to investigate both cases to provide more clarity on the circumstances that led to these unfortunate events.
