Rescuers Investigate Knocking Sounds in Laos Cave Search

In a tense and ongoing rescue operation in Laos, teams are investigating potential signs of life within a flooded cave network where two men remain trapped. The rescuers reported hearing knocking sounds, which could indicate the presence of the missing individuals. However, further investigation is needed to confirm their origin.

New Shaft Discovery

Rescuers have shifted their focus to a newly discovered vertical shaft that may provide a safer entry into the cave system. This shaft, which descends over 100 meters, could lead to a chamber where the men might be located. Thai specialist cave diver Kengkard Bongkawong confirmed the knocking sounds but emphasized the need for further exploration.

The sounds were detected 70 meters down the shaft, with indications that they came from just 5 meters away. This has raised hopes that the missing men could be nearby. The ordeal began on May 20 when eight men entered the cave in central Laos searching for gold but were trapped by heavy rain.

Complex Rescue Efforts

Five of the men have already been rescued, with one guided to safety and four others escaping unaided after significant efforts to drain the floodwaters. The rescue operation has drawn experts from around the world to Xaisomboun province, where conditions remain challenging due to ongoing rainfall and flash flooding.

Efforts to pump water out of the cave continue, alongside strategies to block water sources and build additional retention ponds to prevent further flooding. The rescuers are working with a map drawn with the help of the survivors, hoping the new shaft will connect to another passage beyond the chamber where they were found.

Australian diver Josh Richards noted that there is a significant air pocket further on, through a perilous passage that could be the only place the missing two might be. The rescue teams remain committed to finding the men and bringing them to safety.
