Connecticut Celebrates Latina Leaders at Mujer Hispana Awards

The annual Mujer Hispana Connecticut Awards took place in Berlin, Connecticut, celebrating the achievements of 14 Latina women who have made significant contributions to their communities. These women, recognized for their leadership and service, have played pivotal roles in uplifting Latina voices and supporting families throughout the state.

Honoring Community Leaders

Among the honorees was Mónica Caballero, an immigrant from El Salvador and a family content creator. She founded Conexión Cafecito, an organization that leverages social media to promote Latina-owned businesses and entrepreneurs across Connecticut. Caballero expressed that the recognition underscores her commitment to her community, stating, “We come to this country to have better opportunities but to give back to the communities. Give back with the money economically and culture.”

Caballero also shared that the award serves as motivation to continue her work, emphasizing the importance of growth in business, personal, and family aspects. “This is very important to this award. It represents my mission to continue to do what I do,” she added.

A Legacy of Empowerment

The awards were founded by Yanina Cuentas, who immigrated from Peru. She witnessed the crucial role of Latina leadership in helping families navigate education, housing, and other essential resources. Cuentas highlighted that this year’s honorees exemplify service to their communities and families. “They are being recognized for their qualities and how they work with their communities and their families,” she said, translated from her native Spanish.

Having been held for 15 years, the awards program continues to inspire Cuentas, who remarked on the community that has flourished around the event. “I say ‘Wow!’ that after 15 years, my dreams are coming true, creating a beautiful community of Hispanic women that support other women,” she expressed.

In addition to the 14 honorees, Cuentas herself was recognized for her ongoing contributions to the Latina community in Connecticut, further solidifying the event’s impact on fostering leadership and empowerment among Latina women.
