Cynthiana Splash Pad Introduces Sensory-Friendly Hours for Community Inclusion

The Cynthiana Splash Pad at Flat Run in Harrison County, Kentucky, is taking steps to ensure that all members of the community can enjoy its facilities this summer. Starting Wednesday, June 3, the splash pad will introduce sensory-friendly hours from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, weather permitting. These early hours are designed to provide a quieter environment before regular operations begin, making the space more accessible for individuals who may find the usual bustling atmosphere overstimulating.

Community Inclusion Efforts

Sam Lunger, the Tourism Director, emphasized the importance of inclusion for the community, stating that the goal is for every child and adult to have the opportunity to enjoy the splash pad. “As you can hear, it is loud and exciting, but we’re hoping with those hours it’ll just be calmer and a little less overstimulating, and something that will give people who need a little bit more calm and that space that they need,” Lunger explained while standing in front of the splash pad.

The initiative reflects a commitment to family and community values, ensuring that facilities cater to diverse needs. The sensory-friendly hours are part of a broader effort to make public spaces more welcoming and accessible to all, particularly families with children who may benefit from a quieter setting.
