White House Gold Star Reception Faces Low Attendance from Families of Iran War Casualties

President Donald Trump hosted a national Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day reception at the White House on Tuesday, honoring nearly 40 fallen service members from conflicts dating back to the Vietnam War. The event was intended to recognize the sacrifice of families, but only one family member of the six soldiers killed in the deadliest Iranian drone strike on March 1 at Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, confirmed they would attend.

Families cite short notice and financial barriers

Several families of the six fallen troops said they did not receive invitations in time to arrange travel or childcare. John Thompson, a former Army sergeant and founder of the Iowa‑based veteran support group Salute to the Fallen, reported that families told him the White House invitation arrived only weeks before the ceremony, leaving insufficient time to secure transportation and overnight care for young children.

“What they’ve told me is there has been a lot of confusion around this event, and they weren’t given the details in time,” Thompson said. “Some families also could not afford the trip.”

Calls for transparency and accountability

Gold Star families have expressed frustration over the Pentagon’s limited information about the March 1 strike. Joey Amor, whose wife Master Sgt. Nicole M. Amor was among those killed, posted on Facebook: “There are questions about what happened before the attack, what information was available, what decisions were made, and what happened in the moments leading up to six American soldiers losing their lives. I am done asking quietly. Today, I am asking the American people to stand with these six families and demand transparency.”

U.S. soldiers wounded in the attack also told the Associated Press that they raised concerns about the vulnerability of the Port Shuaiba site before the strike, and that the military medical system failed them in the weeks that followed.

White House and Army response

The White House confirmed that invitations were sent out about two weeks ago and that the ceremony would include a candle‑lighting segment and a musical rendition of “America the Beautiful.” The administration emphasized its commitment to honoring the fallen and their families, stating that the event reflects the nation’s gratitude for their service.

The Army declined to comment on the AP’s reporting, noting that it had not yet briefed the families on the outcome of its investigation, which was completed in June and is still being redacted for sensitive information. The Pentagon also declined to comment.

Personal reflections on the administration’s handling

Donna Burhans, mother of Maj. Cody Khork, said she did not receive an invitation but would not have attended even if she had, describing the experience as too painful. She added that she remains a “big fan” of President Trump after meeting him during the dignified transfer of her son’s remains at Dover Air Force Base.

In contrast, Libby Klinner, spouse of Maj. Alex Klinner, said the short notice prevented her from arranging overnight care for her three young children. She also expressed a lack of interest in supporting an administration she described as “reckless with the lives of our service members.”

President Trump’s framing of the conflict

Earlier in the war, President Trump referred to the conflict as a “little excursion” and later called it “small potatoes,” underscoring his view that the United States remains strong and resolute in defending its interests.

Despite the mixed reactions from families, the White House ceremony proceeded as planned, aiming to provide a solemn tribute that cuts across politics and honors the ultimate sacrifice of America’s service members.
