Make-A-Wish Gifts Camper to Georgia Family of Young Leukemia Survivor

In a heartwarming gesture, Make-A-Wish and Camping World of Savannah teamed up to gift a camper to five-year-old George Handley, a leukemia survivor, and his family in Pooler, Georgia. This generous gift comes after George’s challenging battle with leukemia, which began in December 2022 when he was just two and a half years old.

A Journey of Resilience

George’s journey has been marked by significant health challenges, including pneumonia and COVID-19, which led to a three-week medically induced coma. His mother, Jennifer Handley, recalls the difficult times when doctors feared for his life. Despite these trials, George’s spirit remained unbroken, and he faced each day with energy and joy.

The Handley family, which includes George’s five siblings, has always cherished camping as a way to bond and create lasting memories. Unfortunately, George’s treatments in Savannah and Atlanta often kept him apart from his brothers. The camper now offers them the opportunity to reunite and embark on exciting adventures together.

A Community Effort

The surprise camper was made even more special with the addition of George’s favorite items, including Ghost Pirates and Georgia Bulldogs gear, courtesy of Camping World of Savannah. Bryan Clark, the general manager, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for supporting the community and bringing joy to families like the Handleys.

Craig Harris, a Make-A-Wish volunteer, highlighted the importance of such moments, emphasizing the joy they bring to families during challenging times. The camper symbolizes a new chapter for the Handley family, who are eager to make new memories, one trip and one campfire at a time.

As of May 2025, George has been cancer-free, and with the camper now in their possession, the Handley family looks forward to a future filled with adventure and togetherness.
