Artist Robin Bell brings protest projections on Trump Hotel to Georgetown gallery

Washington, D.C. – Multimedia artist Robin Bell, whose site‑specific projections have illuminated government buildings and the Trump International Hotel, is now showcasing his work in a commercial gallery. The exhibition, titled “Projection Warnings by Robin Bell,” opened at the Addison/Ripley Fine Art gallery on Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown.

From the hotel lobby to the gallery wall

Bell first gained national attention in 2017 when he projected a series of short, pointed messages onto the Trump International Hotel, a property owned by President Trump that operated in a federally‑owned building near the White House. One of the most talked‑about projections read, “Pay Trump Bribes Here,” with an arrow pointing to the hotel’s front entrance. Bell said the piece was meant to visualize how the location could be used to collect money, a concern raised by critics who argued the arrangement violated the Constitution’s emoluments clause.

Since then, Bell has continued to use projection as a form of protest, often setting up equipment on the street outside the targeted building. He emphasizes that his work is protected by the First Amendment, noting that public spaces in D.C. are open to such expression. “We don’t do nudity, we don’t show extreme violence,” Bell explained, adding that his images are intended for a general audience that might encounter them unexpectedly.

New gallery show blends technology and traditional media

The Georgetown show marks Bell’s first foray into a commercial gallery setting. In addition to the projected images, the exhibition features paintings and prints that explore similar themes of government accountability and public transparency. Bell describes the gallery pieces as “more meditative,” offering viewers a chance to reflect on current events without the fleeting nature of a street‑side projection.

Bell’s team remains mindful of public safety and traffic flow when staging projections. He acknowledges that law‑enforcement officers sometimes intervene, but prefers to de‑escalate rather than confront. “Sometimes we have some unruly security or law enforcement who don’t understand our rights, and we realize it’s much better to stop than to fight for our rights at that very moment,” he said.

Community response and legal backdrop

Reactions to Bell’s work have been mixed. While many applaud the creative use of public art to highlight perceived constitutional concerns, some local officials and business owners have expressed unease about unsanctioned displays on private property. Bell notes that a number of attorneys have reached out to discuss the First Amendment implications of his projects.

Despite the controversy, Bell remains committed to using his art as a tool for civic engagement. “The idea is to bring work from the studio to the streets, and also invite people to see work in the world that they live in,” he said.

The exhibition runs through the end of the month, with additional projected pieces scheduled for select public locations throughout Washington, D.C.
