All Victims Recovered in Longview Paper Mill Explosion

In a somber announcement, officials confirmed the recovery of all missing victims from the devastating explosion at the Nippon Dynawave paper mill in Longview, Washington. The incident, which occurred during a shift change on Tuesday, resulted in the tragic loss of 11 lives.

Details of the Incident

The explosion was caused by the implosion and rupture of a chemical tank designed to hold 900,000 gallons of a hazardous substance known as white liquor, used in the paper-pulping process. This chemical brew contains sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, and disodium carbonate. The implosion occurred at 7:15 a.m. as workers were transitioning shifts.

Longview Fire Chief Brad Hannig announced the recovery of the ninth and final missing employee on Saturday. The victims have been identified as Gilberto Bernal, 52; Tyler Covington, 29; Brad Covington, 27; Robert Wilson, 48; Dale Miller, 54; Jared Ammons, 35; Braydon Finkas, 38; Clinton Duran, 26; John Forsberg, 51; Norman Barlow, 58; and Dillon Miller.

Recovery Efforts

The recovery process, described as methodical and challenging, involved moving heavy debris and conducting drone flyovers to ensure no area was overlooked. Deputy Chief Kurt Stitch of Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue highlighted the difficulty of the operation, which required careful handling of hazardous materials.

Efforts were also made to address environmental concerns, as high-pH water contaminated with chemicals was found in nearby ditches. Officials have been working to dilute these chemicals, and improvements in pH levels have been reported. The contaminated water was diverted away from Longview’s wellhead area, ensuring the safety of the city’s drinking water.

Ongoing Investigation

The cause of the tank’s implosion remains under investigation. Authorities are committed to uncovering the factors that led to this tragic event, aiming to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of workers in similar facilities.
