Texarkana, Ark. – The Third Annual Oktoberfest lit up Front Street Plaza on Saturday evening, offering residents a taste of German culture blended with home‑grown flavor. The event, organized by Main Street Texarkana, moved from its previous location to the larger Festival Plaza, giving families more room for live music, games, a petting zoo and a showcase of exotic animals.
Local volunteers keep the celebration thriving
Executive Director Ina McDowell highlighted the dedication of roughly 50 volunteers who gave their time to ensure the festival’s success. “Their willingness to serve is the heart of Oktoberfest,” McDowell said, noting that the volunteers helped set up stages, manage food stations and coordinate activities for children.
Food, music and family fun
Attendees enjoyed a variety of local dishes prepared with a German twist, from bratwurst and pretzels to sweet pastries. The stage featured live bands playing traditional German tunes, creating a festive atmosphere that encouraged dancing and sing‑alongs. Kids explored the petting zoo, where they could interact with goats, rabbits and other friendly animals, while families took part in games and crafts designed for all ages.
Honoring a downtown champion
This year’s Oktoberfest was dedicated to the memory of Bill Scurlock, a longtime supporter of Main Street Texarkana and owner of the beloved Pecan Point Restaurant. “Bill helped us all the time,” McDowell said, adding that Scurlock was also a member of the Four States Fermenters, a regional group that promotes craft brewing and local heritage.
Looking ahead
Last year’s attendance topped 2,000 visitors, and organizers hope the expanded venue will accommodate even larger crowds in future years. The success of the festival underscores the strength of Texarkana’s volunteer spirit and the community’s appetite for events that celebrate both local talent and cultural traditions.
With the positive response from families, local businesses and volunteers, Oktoberfest is set to become a staple of Texarkana’s summer calendar, reinforcing the city’s commitment to vibrant community gatherings.
