Chemical Accident in Washington State Claims Eleven Lives

A devastating chemical accident at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview, Washington, has claimed the lives of eleven individuals. The incident occurred when a tank containing ‘white liquor’—a chemical solution used in paper pulp production—ruptured, leading to a tragic loss of life. Initial reports confirmed two fatalities, but the death toll rose as recovery crews worked tirelessly to locate the nine missing individuals.

Recovery Efforts and Environmental Concerns

Throughout the week, recovery teams, including Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue, searched through debris and utilized drones to survey the site. Deputy Chief Kurt Stitch confirmed that all missing individuals have now been accounted for. The ruptured tank held approximately 900,000 gallons of the chemical solution, which has raised concerns about environmental contamination. Although tests have detected contamination in the nearby Columbia River, officials have reported no adverse effects on air quality or Longview’s drinking water supply.

Nippon Dynawave Packaging, a subsidiary of Japan’s Nippon Paper Industries, has been operating the Longview plant since acquiring it from Weyerhaeuser in 2016. The company is Japan’s second-largest paper manufacturer by sales. As the community grapples with this tragedy, questions about safety protocols and environmental impacts remain at the forefront.
