For more than two decades Outlaw Paintball has been a staple of family recreation in Pflugerville, Texas. The business opened in 2003 on an 11‑acre site just east of I‑35 on Grand Avenue Parkway and has grown from a former concrete‑manufacturing operation into a dedicated paintball facility.
Family‑focused origins
Owner Debra Shaffer explains that the transition began when her son and his friends were spending large sums at another paintball field. “My son and his friends used to go to another paintball place and they spent a lot of money those weekends,” Shaffer said. “So my son and husband decided we should open up our own paintball field. Slowly but surely, we bought different things and started growing it to where eventually we shut down the concrete and made this strictly paintball.”
Safe, inclusive play
Paintball at Outlaw is a competitive sport where teams or individuals eliminate opponents by striking them with paint‑filled projectiles. Masks are mandatory, and only paint sold on‑site may be used. Players can rent equipment or bring their own, and the field accommodates all skill levels. Shaffer notes that families often play together, with parents joining their children for a weekend of fun.
Anyone aged ten or older may participate, and the facility offers low‑impact options for younger children. “One of the challenges is setting up fields that are safe,” Shaffer said. “Our No. 1 thing is, have a good time, but be safe.”
Weekend‑only operation
Outlaw Paintball is open on Saturdays and Sundays. Groups of ten or more can reserve a slot online, while the air‑ball field remains open for walk‑in play during operating hours. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and beverages, making the venue a convenient spot for family outings.
Because the nearest competing paintball sites are in Jonestown, Manor, and Dripping Springs, Outlaw stays busy every weekend, drawing players from across Central Texas.
Future enhancements
Looking ahead, owner Shaffer mentioned plans for glow‑in‑the‑dark night games and field updates overseen by head referee Stephen Swope. These enhancements aim to broaden the appeal of the sport and provide new experiences for both seasoned players and newcomers.
Outlaw Paintball continues to embody a community‑first approach, offering a safe, affordable, and family‑friendly environment for recreation in Pflugerville.
