Iowa Primaries: Key Senate and House Races to Watch

As Iowa voters prepare to cast their ballots on Tuesday, several high-profile primary races are drawing national attention. The outcomes could significantly impact the balance of power in Congress.

U.S. Senate Race

The open U.S. Senate seat, following Sen. Joni Ernst’s decision not to seek a third term, has attracted fierce competition. Rep. Ashley Hinson, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, is vying for the Republican nomination against former state Sen. Jim Carlin. Hinson’s campaign focuses on veterans’ rights and domestic production, while Carlin criticizes her ties to the Washington establishment.

On the Democratic side, Iowa Sen. Zach Wahls and Rep. Josh Turek compete for their party’s nomination. Wahls, with progressive endorsements, advocates for raising the minimum wage and reforming welfare programs. Turek, seen as more moderate, emphasizes bipartisan support and veterans’ benefits.

U.S. House Races

In Iowa’s 1st District, Rep. Marianette Miller-Meeks faces a primary challenge from David Pautsch. Miller-Meeks, backed by Trump, focuses on tax cuts and protecting Social Security, while Pautsch emphasizes immigration enforcement and energy independence. Democrats Christina Bohannan and Travis Terrell are competing for their party’s nomination, with Bohannan leading in campaign contributions.

In the 3rd District, incumbent Rep. Zach Nunn, running unopposed for the Republican nomination, highlights his work on foster care and Second Amendment rights. He will face either State Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott or Xavier Carrigan in November, with both Democrats focusing on healthcare and immigration reform.

Polling stations in Iowa will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 2, as voters decide these critical races.
