COCC faculty calls ‘Last Chance Rally’ to avert strike as deadline looms

Faculty members of Central Oregon Community College (COCC) are mobilizing Bend residents for a “Last Chance Rally” on Thursday, Oct. 1, at noon. The rally, held at the Coats Campus Center, is intended to pressure college administrators to finalize a new contract before a potential strike set to begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5.

Union vote shows overwhelming support for action

The COCC Faculty Forum reports that 98% of its members participated in a strike‑authorization vote, with 96% voting in favor of a strike. Union leaders say the vote reflects deep concern over the college’s handling of contract talks and a desire to secure a fair agreement without resorting to work stoppage.

Negotiations remain ongoing

College officials and the faculty union are scheduled for a state‑mediated bargaining session on Friday, Oct. 2. The union has extended an offer that remains on the table until 2 p.m. Friday, stating the proposal could prevent a strike while preserving program and personnel levels and avoiding unplanned tuition hikes.

“We have an urgency around this because we want to settle a fair contract as soon as possible and avert a strike,” said Mindy Williams, bargaining chair for the COCC Faculty Forum. “Unfortunately, the college has not shared that same urgency. We need decision‑makers at the bargaining table who are prepared to have the affordability conversation and work toward a resolution.”

Faculty seeks transparency on finances

Union representatives are also demanding direct discussions with college leaders about the institution’s financial forecasts. They argue that projected deficits cited by administrators have not materialized and request an honest conversation about what is truly affordable for the college’s resources.

“COCC is a public institution with a commitment to serve today’s students and community. We should be having an honest conversation about what is actually affordable and how the college’s resources can best serve students and employees,” said Sara Henson, president of the COCC Faculty Forum.

Potential impact on students and community

Should a strike occur, it could affect classroom instruction, support services, and the broader Bend community that relies on the college for workforce training and continuing education. Faculty leaders emphasize that a strike is a last resort and that there is still time to reach an agreement that benefits both staff and students.

Community members, students, and faculty are encouraged to attend the rally to show solidarity and underscore the importance of a swift, fair resolution.
