Los Angeles mayoral candidates debate Israel, policing, housing and homelessness

At a packed town‑hall at the Skirball Center, Los Angeles voters heard a direct showdown between incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman, both Democrats vying for the city’s top office in the Nov. 3 election. The debate covered foreign policy, public safety, housing and homelessness, reflecting the issues most Angelenos face daily.

Foreign‑policy remarks draw sharp contrast

Raman defended her earlier description of Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks as “genocide,” saying she used the term because other experts had applied it and because she felt compelled to highlight the suffering of children and the targeting of hospitals. “I recognize that genocide is a deeply painful word,” Raman told the audience.

Bass, who grew up with many Jewish families whose parents or grandparents survived the Holocaust, stopped short of using that label. She said she would oppose any city‑level boycott, divestment or sanction efforts against Israeli‑based companies or firms with ties to Israel, emphasizing the need for respectful dialogue and economic partnership.

Policing and public safety

On public safety, Bass warned that Los Angeles operates with the lowest police staffing levels in years, arguing the city cannot maintain an effective police department without more officers. She cited a January 2026 statement that the second‑largest U.S. city “cannot have an effective police department while it is operating with the lowest staffing levels in years.”

Raman offered a different approach, proposing an expanded unarmed‑response system integrated into the 911 dispatch network to relieve LAPD officers. “We can build a citywide system of unarmed response that can be answered as quickly as armed calls and take load off the LAPD,” she said.

Housing and homelessness solutions

Both candidates agreed that homelessness must be addressed urgently. Raman pledged to accelerate housing construction and move beyond merely shifting encampments, aiming to get more people indoors quickly. Bass highlighted her administration’s “Inside Safe” program, which she said has placed 5,808 unhoused individuals into shelter and secured permanent housing for 1,431, while also addressing 121 encampments.

Critics, however, note that a Los Angeles Times analysis found roughly 40 % of those placed in temporary housing returned to the streets, underscoring the challenge of lasting solutions.

Election outlook

The debate underscored the stark policy differences that will shape the November mayoral race. Bass leans on her record of expanding public safety resources and managing the city’s homelessness response, while Raman pushes for innovative policing reforms and a more aggressive housing agenda. Angelenos will decide which vision aligns best with their hopes for a safer, more affordable city.
