Ruidoso, N.M. – After days of intense rain, the Rio Ruidoso and Cedar Creek have risen dramatically, flooding roads and homes throughout the area. In response, Valencia County’s swiftwater rescue team has been dispatched to Lincoln County to support local officials and protect residents.
Rapid response to a growing threat
Crews are working in Paradise Canyon to clear debris from clogged culverts that have forced water onto roadways. In nearby Gavilan Canyon, damage from last year’s flood remains visible, reminding the community of the danger.
“Last year it was terrible here in Ruidoso,” said longtime resident Jaime Aragon, who lost his home and diesel pickup when floodwaters swept through Gavilan Canyon. Aragon now plans to relocate with his son to Colorado Springs.
Valencia County’s swiftwater team on the ground
Firefighter Gabriel Griego explained that the team was called out for flood watch and to assist with swiftwater rescues. “We are here because we got called out for flood watch and to help with swiftwater rescues,” Griego said.
The unit arrived with a high‑water truck designed for evacuating people trapped in homes or vehicles. “This vehicle is capable of making high‑water evacuations for people that are entrapped in their vehicles and their houses,” Griego added.
Inside the chase vehicle, the team carries ropes, carabiners, rigging, life vests and dry suits, ensuring they are prepared for any emergency. “We have everything ready to go for the time of need,” Griego said.
Focus on safety and community reassurance
While the team hopes its equipment will not be needed, officials stress that readiness is essential. “We want everybody to be safe, everybody to go home and go to sleep at night,” Griego said.
The Valencia County swiftwater rescue team and its high‑water truck will remain in Lincoln County through Thursday, providing a visible safety net for residents as water levels fluctuate.
