Michigan Farmers Face Tight Budgets as Dry Summer Threatens Harvest

LANSING, Michigan – As the harvest season begins, Michigan farmers are confronting the financial fallout of a dry summer that stressed corn crops and tightened already‑thin profit margins.

Local growers brace for lower corn yields

Clinton County farmer Zach Wagner says the July drought hit corn during a critical growth stage. “Farmers are optimistic, because we only get a cash crop where I only get paid once a year,” Wagner explained, but he expects his corn yield to fall below average.

Recent rain arrived after the corn’s most vulnerable period, offering little chance to recover lost yield. However, Wagner believes the added moisture could still benefit his soybean crop, which matures later in the season.

Weather will dictate final costs

Farmers are watching the forecast closely. A warm, dry stretch before the end of the growing season could naturally dry fields, reducing the need for expensive mechanical drying. Without sufficient warmth and dry weather, producers may face higher drying expenses that would further erode profit margins.

Broader financial pressures on Michigan agriculture

Theresa Sisung of the Michigan Farm Bureau highlighted that farmers receive less than 12 cents of every dollar consumers spend on food. While most shoppers do not buy raw corn or soybeans directly, those crops are essential ingredients in livestock feed, cooking oils, and countless processed foods.

Higher fuel prices also threaten to increase transportation costs for moving agricultural products from farms to processing facilities and ultimately to grocery stores. “Because of those increases in fuel prices, you may start to see that trickle down to consumers,” Sisung said.

What the harvest means for families

For growers like Wagner, who rely on a single annual cash crop for the bulk of their income, the outcome of this harvest will have lasting effects beyond the current season. A reduced corn harvest could lower overall farm revenue, while a healthier soybean crop might offset some losses.

Michigan’s agricultural community remains hopeful that favorable late‑season weather will ease the drying process and help protect returns on the year’s investment.

Looking ahead

As the harvest progresses, farmers will continue to monitor temperature, rainfall, and field conditions. A successful, dry finish could simplify harvesting and keep additional costs down, offering a modest boost to already‑tight farm budgets.
