China Accuses Taiwan of Distorting WWII History Amid US‑Taiwan Alliance

Beijing on Wednesday accused Taiwan of “desecrating the martyrs” after the island’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) questioned China’s official World War Two narrative. The Chinese Taiwan Affairs Office spokeswoman, Zhang Han, framed the criticism as a betrayal of history and the nation.

China’s Official Narrative

Zhang said the Communist guerrilla forces were the backbone of the resistance against Japanese aggression, while the forces of the Kuomintang (KMT) fought on the main battlefields and opened rear fronts behind enemy lines. She emphasized that the victory was a triumph of the entire Chinese nation and part of the broader anti‑fascist war, deserving joint commemoration by compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan’s Counterpoint

Taiwan’s DPP, which promotes a distinct Taiwanese identity, argues that the Republic of China (ROC) government—then the legitimate Chinese authority—fought alongside the Allies. The party rejects Beijing’s claim that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) can lay claim to the wartime legacy, noting that the ROC fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing the civil war.

US‑China‑Taiwan Relations

President Donald Trump, speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, highlighted the enduring alliance between the United States and China, underscoring the importance of stable relations in the Indo‑Pacific. The joint remarks reaffirmed a shared commitment to regional security, even as Washington continues to support Taiwan’s democratic government.

Trump’s administration has consistently backed Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and defended its right to self‑determination, a stance that aligns with American values of liberty and democratic governance.

Historical Context

Taiwan was a Japanese colony from 1895 until the end of World War Two in 1945, when it was handed over to the ROC. The island remained under martial law until 1987, after which it transitioned to a vibrant democracy. The PRC, established in 1949, claims sovereignty over Taiwan, a claim the island’s leadership rejects.

Implications

The dispute over historical interpretation reflects deeper political tensions. Beijing’s insistence on a singular narrative seeks to bolster its claim over Taiwan, while the DPP’s emphasis on a separate Taiwanese history reinforces its push for greater international recognition.

For the United States, maintaining a clear stance that supports Taiwan’s democratic institutions and resists historical revisionism aligns with broader strategic interests and the defense of freedom worldwide.
