Friday night, around nine o’clock, the bar at Vanguard is loud in the best way. Someone at the far end is working through a beer they clearly didn’t expect to like, and the person next to them is explaining, with genuine conviction, why the Sonoran is the only hot dog worth ordering. You can smell the fryer and the char from the sidewalk on South 2nd Street, and if you’ve never been, that smell is your answer to the question of where to go.
Vanguard has been operating on the south end of Walker’s Point since 2013, and in that time it’s become one of those places Milwaukee residents stop apologizing for loving. The concept sounds gimmicky until you eat there: a full-service bar and kitchen built almost entirely around the American hot dog, elevated just enough to be interesting without losing the thing that makes a hot dog satisfying in the first place.
The menu runs long and changes seasonally, but there are anchors. The Seoul Dog comes loaded with kimchi, gochujang aioli, and crushed seaweed crackers — it sounds aggressive, and it is, in the right way. The Brat — a nod to Wisconsin’s actual religion — is split, griddled, and served on a pretzel bun with whole grain mustard and sauerkraut that has some real acidity to it, not the pale, tired stuff. If you want a reference point for the kitchen’s restraint, order the Traditional: natural casing frankfurter, yellow mustard, sport peppers, celery salt. It’s essentially a Chicago dog, and it’s pretty much perfect.
Prices are reasonable — most dogs run between eight and twelve dollars, and they’re filling. Order two if you’re hungry. The fries are hand-cut and worth getting, though the sweet potato tots have their own following. The beer list leans heavily on Midwest craft options with a few wild cards, and the cocktail menu is short but competent. This is not the kind of bar that needs seventeen specialty drinks; it knows what it is.
The space itself is worth describing. It’s large and deliberately a little rough — exposed brick, high ceilings, mismatched seating, a back patio that gets very good in summer when the weather cooperates. The crowd on any given night is genuinely mixed: couples, groups of friends, solo drinkers at the bar, people who wandered over from a show at one of the nearby venues. Walker’s Point draws that kind of overlap, and Vanguard fits the neighborhood without trying too hard to define it.
Service is casual but not indifferent. They’re busy on weekends, and the kitchen can slow down when the room fills up, so order a drink and settle in. This is not a fast-food situation dressed up in bar clothes. There’s real cooking happening, and it shows.
If you’ve got visitors in town who assume Milwaukee means bratwurst and nothing else, bring them here. Not to prove a point, just to eat. The hot dogs will do the rest.
