San Antonio – The Spurs announced a series of measures aimed at keeping tickets affordable and available for local supporters. Senior Vice President of Business Development, Membership and Ticket Operations Tim Sailer said the team has been monitoring brokers, individual resellers and even some season‑ticket holders who buy tickets solely to flip them for profit.
Monitoring resale activity
“In the professional sporting industry, but even college athletics, you get some people that buy season tickets for the wrong reason,” Sailer explained. “They buy them to resell them for a profit.” The monitoring effort began roughly a year and a half ago, well before the recent playoff run, but the heightened demand during the postseason sharpened the focus.
More flexible ticket options
To broaden access, the Spurs are moving away from full‑season packages and offering more partial‑season plans. “We focused a little bit more on partial plans, less full season, so that we could have more people in the community that could be a part of this,” Sailer said. He noted that demand for Spurs games is at an all‑time high, making the shift especially timely.
Dynamic pricing to match market demand
The franchise is also employing dynamic pricing, a system that adjusts ticket costs based on factors such as opponent, day of the week, time of year and the likelihood of star players appearing. Sailer likened the approach to the way airline and hotel rates fluctuate. “Different opponents, different days of the week, different times of the year dictate the value proposition and what those prices are,” he said. As a result, a weekend matchup against a marquee opponent may carry a higher price than a weekday game.
Group sales as a community anchor
Group sales remain a cornerstone of the Spurs’ strategy. “We’ve maintained one of the best group sales programs in the league,” Sailer said, adding that the team finished second in the league for group tickets last season. Group tickets account for roughly 20% of the arena’s capacity each night, often bundled with themed experiences, food or hospitality packages.
By combining tighter resale monitoring, flexible ticket plans, dynamic pricing, and robust group‑sale offerings, the Spurs hope to keep more seats in the hands of San Antonio residents rather than out‑of‑state speculators.
