SpaceX Starship engine glitch raises concerns for NASA’s 2028 moon landing schedule

SpaceX experienced an engine shutdown on its 14th uncrewed test flight of the Starship vehicle on Monday, cutting the mission short just hours after launch from Texas. The malfunction involved one of the three main Raptor engines after Starship separated from its lower‑stage booster.

Potential impact on NASA’s Artemis timeline

Starship is a key component of NASA’s Artemis program, which plans to land the first crewed mission on the lunar surface as early as 2028. The agency relies on the same Raptor engine system for transporting astronauts to and from the moon. Any required redesign or fleet‑wide upgrades could push back the schedule, according to aerospace engineer Dean Sladen of Accu Components.

“Any engine fix that holds up the next flights, including the planned attempt to catch the ship with the launch tower’s arms after re‑entry, eats into that schedule,” Sladen said.

NASA’s urgency

NASA officials have emphasized that the “real pressure is the moon,” noting that a reliable Starship is essential for the Artemis III rehearsal flight targeted for next summer. The agency has said it will select whichever lunar lander is ready to fly first, keeping competition between SpaceX and Blue Origin healthy for progress.

While the recent test still achieved several objectives, including a commercial satellite deployment, the engine glitch adds uncertainty to the timeline for the Artemis III mission, which could see a crewed lunar landing as early as summer 2027 for low‑Earth‑orbit testing.

Broader implications for SpaceX

The setback also affects SpaceX’s broader commercial goals, such as expanding its Starlink broadband network. Raptor engine issues have plagued earlier flights, including a failure to ignite on the 12th test in May, though all engines performed successfully on the 13th flight in July.

SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, continues to compete with Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin for NASA contracts. Both companies are developing human landing systems based on their respective launch vehicles, with the eventual goal of supporting NASA’s return to the moon.

NASA and SpaceX did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
