Kansas Senate Candidate’s Beef Repentance Sparks Outcry from Ranchers and Trump Administration

In a January 2020 sermon titled “What Would Jesus Say About Climate Change?” Democratic Senate hopeful Adam Hamilton, who once led the nation’s largest United Methodist congregation, called on his Kansas congregation to repent for their carbon footprints – specifically for eating beef and raising cattle. Hamilton framed the call as a moral duty, saying, “I realize that this has impact, even if it seems small, it has an impact on the world and future generations.”

Local backlash from the state’s cattle community

The remarks have ignited a firestorm among Kansas ranchers and the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA). KLA Chief Executive Officer Matt Teagarden called the sermon “disappointing,” noting that beef is a vital, nutritious part of the American diet and that cattle contribute only about 2% of total U.S. greenhouse‑gas emissions. Kansas is the nation’s third‑largest beef producer, with roughly 5.8 million head of cattle – more than the state’s 2.9 million residents – generating tens of billions of dollars and thousands of jobs.

Trump administration’s stance on agriculture and energy costs

Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, the incumbent, highlighted the Trump administration’s efforts to protect Kansas farmers from rising diesel prices and foreign competition. President Trump’s policies have kept fuel costs lower for agricultural producers and have opposed excessive regulation that could hurt the cattle industry. Marshall warned that Hamilton’s “repentance” rhetoric mirrors the liberal agenda that seeks to penalize Kansas’s core economic drivers.

Political implications for the Senate race

While Kansas has a 94‑year record of supporting Republican Senate candidates, recent polling shows the race tightening. Fox News’ Power Rankings moved Kansas from “Likely R” to “Lean R,” and the Cook Political Report noted a similar shift. Hamilton’s climate‑focused messaging appears to be a factor in the narrowing gap, as many voters view his stance as out of step with the state’s agricultural heritage.

Campaign responses

Hamilton’s campaign responded that Sen. Marshall has repeatedly introduced legislation aimed at reducing emissions from cattle, yet the senator continues to support policies that increase diesel costs for farmers. Tyson Brody, a spokesperson for Hamilton, said, “Roger should repent for failing to stand up for Kansas cattle producers on tariffs, foreign imports, and skyrocketing diesel prices.”

Why the issue matters to Kansas families

Beyond economics, the debate touches on family values and stewardship. Many Kansas families rely on cattle farming for their livelihoods and view beef as a wholesome, traditional food. The call for dietary repentance clashes with the community’s sense of heritage and the Constitutionally protected right to pursue a livelihood without undue government interference.

Looking ahead

As the November election approaches, Kansas voters will weigh Hamilton’s climate‑centric platform against Marshall’s promise to defend the state’s agricultural interests and the Trump administration’s commitment to lower energy costs. The outcome will signal whether Kansas continues its long‑standing support for pro‑business, pro‑family policies or shifts toward a more progressive environmental agenda.
