Cavs GM Mike Gansey to Lead 76ers Basketball Operations

Mike Gansey, who has served as the general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been appointed as the new president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, according to multiple reports. Gansey, 43, takes over from Daryl Morey, who parted ways with the franchise earlier this month after a six-year tenure.

Gansey’s Background and Achievements

Gansey’s journey in basketball management began after his successful college basketball career at West Virginia University, where he played a pivotal role in leading the Mountaineers to the Elite Eight in 2005. He joined the Cavaliers’ front office in the 2011-12 season and steadily climbed the ranks, eventually becoming the team’s general manager in February 2022. Under his leadership, the Cavaliers averaged 53.8 wins over four full seasons and reached the Eastern Conference finals this year.

Challenges and Opportunities with the 76ers

Gansey will report to Josh Harris and the Sixers’ ownership group, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), as well as to Bob Myers, the former GM and President of the Golden State Warriors. Myers, known for constructing four NBA championship teams, was appointed last October as President of Sports for HBSE. Gansey faces the challenge of leading a team that has not advanced past the Eastern Conference semifinals since 2001. Despite missing the playoffs in the 2024-25 season due to injuries to key players like Joel Embiid, the 76ers bounced back to secure the seventh seed in the East this season. They managed to upset the Boston Celtics in a seven-game first-round series before being swept by the New York Knicks in the conference semifinals.
