Arizona Wildcats’ Erin Tack and Sydnie Vanek Qualify for NCAA Championships

The University of Arizona’s women’s track and field team showcased their talent at the NCAA West Regionals in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with two athletes earning their places at the NCAA Championships. Erin Tack, a graduate senior, secured her spot by placing 12th in the javelin with a mark of 50.29 meters (165-0). This achievement marks Tack’s first opportunity to compete at the NCAA Championships, a significant milestone in her athletic career after previously playing for the Arizona women’s basketball team.

Joining Tack is Sydnie Vanek, a junior who also excels in volleyball. Vanek’s impressive performance in the long jump, where she placed third with a mark of 6.63 meters (21-9), earned her a ticket to the championships. Vanek has had a remarkable year, contributing significantly to the Arizona volleyball team with 51 total blocks, and now adds NCAA track and field championship contender to her list of accomplishments.

Arizona Wildcats’ Continued Success

In addition to Tack and Vanek, several other Wildcats advanced to the next round of regionals. Hollan Powers and Taylen Wise moved forward in the 100-meter hurdles, with Powers finishing 23rd and Wise 10th in the first round. Powers has already qualified for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon, showcasing her versatility and determination.

McKenna Watson also made strides, advancing in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Watson’s third-place finish in her 100m dash heat with a time of 11.50 and her 16th overall finish in the 200m dash with a time of 23.22 highlight her speed and competitiveness.

The Wildcats’ journey continues as Powers, Wise, and Watson prepare to compete on Saturday for a chance to join their teammates at the NCAA Championships. The top 12 individuals from each competition will advance, keeping the stakes high and the competition fierce.

Men’s Team Ready to Compete

On the men’s side, five Arizona athletes are set to compete for championship bids. Mason Lawyer will participate in the 100m and 200m dashes, while James Onanubosi will join him in the 200m. Lawi Ngetich will compete in the 1500m, and John Paredes and Parker Duskin will take on the 110m hurdles. Additionally, Onanubosi, Paredes, Duskin, and Lawyer will represent Arizona in the 4x100m relay.
