Sofia Coppola’s ‘Marie Antoinette’ Celebrates 20 Years with New Exhibit and Re‑Release

To mark the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola’s stylized biopic Marie Antoinette, the Palace of Versailles has opened a dedicated exhibition showcasing the film’s costumes, set pieces, and behind‑the‑scenes photographs. The exhibit runs through the month, offering visitors a chance to see the pastel gowns designed by Oscar‑winning costume designer Milena Canonero alongside original props and décor used on set.

New Photo Book Highlights Production Life

Photographer and longtime Coppola collaborator Andrew Durham has compiled a new book, published by Important Flowers, featuring around 400 curated images from his 1,872‑photo archive. Durham, who traveled with the director from Los Angeles to Paris, captured candid moments of cast and crew, including scenes of actors in period dress using early‑2000s technology.

“I was there just to document the production for Sofia,” Durham said. “I walked around with my camera and did my thing.” His collection, first featured in Vogue France, has since appeared on merchandise and across social media, becoming a visual time capsule of a film shot just before the iPhone era.

Re‑Release and Cultural Impact

Following the exhibition, the film will receive a full theatrical re‑release next month, allowing a new generation to experience Coppola’s mood‑driven period drama. Over the past two decades, the movie has shifted from early criticism—boos at Cannes and accusations of historical inaccuracy—to being celebrated as a catalyst for modern, vibe‑focused period pieces.

Last year, London’s V&A museum displayed a multi‑room showcase of the young queen’s wardrobe and related runway pieces, with curator Sarah Grant noting the exhibit would not have been possible without Coppola’s film.

Industry Context

The entertainment industry faces challenges, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting roughly 30% unemployment among film workers since 2022. Despite tighter budgets, the enduring popularity of Marie Antoinette demonstrates the lasting appeal of visually rich storytelling.

Fans can also look forward to the upcoming documentary “Making Marie Antoinette,” completed by Sofia Coppola and her late mother, filmmaker Eleanor Coppola, which offers a mother’s perspective on the production.
