Sarasota, Fla. – Ringling College of Art and Design is expanding its animation offerings with a brand‑new 2D character animation degree, set to begin in the fall of 2027. The program is designed to teach traditional hand‑drawn techniques that major Hollywood studios and independent creators continue to demand.
Why 2D is back
While computer‑generated imagery dominates the market, hand‑drawn animation is experiencing a resurgence in independent films and anime. Ringling faculty say the revival reflects audience appetite for the timeless charm of hand‑crafted storytelling.
Industry‑seasoned instruction
Faculty member Tammy Zeitler, a veteran of Warner Brothers and Disney projects such as Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Space Jam, Curious George and Lilo & Stitch, will lead students through the fundamentals of 2D craft. “2D is magic,” Zeitler told the college. “A simple bouncing ball can make people laugh – it’s just lines and drawings, but it’s magical.” She added that the medium gives artists greater creative control, allowing them to develop original characters and attract studio interest on their own terms.
Historic Disney desks
Students will work at authentic animation desks donated by Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. Those very desks helped bring classic films such as Mulan, Tarzan, Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear to life, providing a tangible link to the golden age of hand‑drawn cinema.
Alumni success and career pathways
Department head Paul Downs highlighted the strong track record of Ringling graduates. “We already have a large number of alumni working on 2D productions,” Downs said. He cited 2016 graduate Echo Wu, who created the Netflix series Jentry Child vs. the Underworld and earned multiple Emmy Awards for the show.
Graduates of the new major will leave with a full skill set to pursue studio positions, freelance work, or creator‑owned indie productions, reinforcing Sarasota’s growing reputation as a hub for creative talent.
Local interest and enrollment
