Rocky statue finds permanent home atop Philadelphia Museum of Art steps

Philadelphia’s beloved Rocky statue is now a permanent fixture on the top of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Workers completed the move on Wednesday, securing the 12‑foot bronze figure on a newly built underground foundation that will keep it stable for years to come.

From exhibit to permanent placement

Earlier this year the statue spent several months inside the museum as part of a special exhibition. During that time, a replica loaned by Sylvester Stallone stood on the steps for visitors to photograph. With the exhibit now closed, the original sculpture was carefully lifted, transported, and set in place at the summit of the iconic “Rocky Steps.”

New home for a boxing legend

The relocation was part of a broader effort to enhance the museum’s public‑art spaces. Crews spent weeks constructing a supportive underground foundation, ensuring the statue can withstand weather and foot traffic. The project reflects the city’s commitment to preserving cultural landmarks that draw tourists and celebrate local heritage.

Joe Frazier tribute joins the scene

In a fitting nod to another Philadelphia boxing great, a 12‑foot statue of the late Joe Frazier now occupies the former spot of Rocky at the base of the steps. The Frazier monument adds depth to the museum’s outdoor display, offering visitors a chance to honor two of the sport’s most storied figures in one historic setting.

What this means for the community

City officials and museum staff say the permanent installation will boost tourism and reinforce Philadelphia’s identity as a city of iconic moments. The Rocky steps have long been a pilgrimage site for fans of the film series and for runners training for the annual Rocky Marathon. With the statue now fixed in place, the experience becomes even more authentic for locals and visitors alike.

“We’re proud to give Rocky a lasting home where he belongs,” said a museum spokesperson. “The new foundation not only protects the artwork but also honors the spirit of perseverance that the character represents for generations of Philadelphians.”

Looking ahead

The museum plans to incorporate additional interpretive signage near the statues, providing historical context about the films, the real‑life boxers, and the cultural impact of the Rocky franchise on the city. The enhancements are slated for completion early next year.

Philadelphia residents can now enjoy the full sight of Rocky greeting them at the top of the steps, a symbol of the city’s resilience and a reminder that great stories often begin with a single, determined step.
