Bronx residents awoke to a serious fire on Montgomery Avenue between 174th and 175th Streets at approximately 7:46 a.m. on Tuesday. The blaze quickly engulfed multiple apartments, prompting a rapid response from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).
Casualties and injuries
Emergency crews found a 31-year-old man on the sidewalk after he apparently leapt from a window to escape the flames. He was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. An unidentified man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four FDNY firefighters sustained non‑critical injuries while battling the fire. Five additional civilians were also injured, bringing the total number of hurt persons to ten.
Firefighters’ account
Deputy Chief Andrew Holzmaier of the FDNY explained that the fire intensified after firefighters were forced to open a closed door and break windows to gain access. “The door was closed on arrival. Just through the course of the fire and having to break windows, opening doors, that may have assisted it,” Holzmaier said. He added that the fire spread further through the common bathroom wet walls, where plumbing and electrical lines run, allowing flames to move into adjoining and upper‑level apartments.
Investigation underway
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by city authorities. No official statements have been released regarding potential sources such as electrical faults, cooking incidents, or other common triggers.
Community response
Neighbors gathered outside the affected building, offering assistance and expressing concern for the victims. Local officials reminded residents of fire safety practices, including the importance of clear exit routes and the dangers of attempting to escape through windows without proper equipment.
FDNY resources
The FDNY continues to monitor the situation and provide support to the families of those injured. The department also emphasized its commitment to rapid response and thorough investigations to prevent future tragedies.
As the community mourns the loss of one life and supports those recovering from injuries, city officials will work with investigators to determine the fire’s origin and take any necessary corrective actions.
