Montgomery, Ala. – In a unified vote Tuesday night, the Montgomery City Council approved a $373 million budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, 2026. Council President C.C. Calhoun explained that the council took extra time, holding recess meetings and additional conversations to resolve administrative issues before moving forward.
Key Priorities in the New Budget
The budget reflects the city’s focus on three core areas: public safety, infrastructure and government efficiency. Approximately $126.7 million is allocated to the Montgomery Police Department and Montgomery Fire/Rescue, with $65 million directed to police services and $61 million to fire and rescue operations. Mayor Steven Reed described the funding as an investment in law‑enforcement, fire protection, emergency response and the personnel who deliver those services.
Beyond safety, the plan includes significant spending on city infrastructure projects aimed at improving roads, water systems and public facilities. The budget also provides raises for city employees, underscoring the council’s commitment to supporting the workforce that keeps Montgomery running.
Mayor Reed’s Vision
Mayor Reed praised the council’s work, saying, “A budget is more than a collection of numbers. It is a statement about our priorities and the kind of city we are working to build.” He emphasized that the budget enables continued investment in public safety, supports essential service employees and strengthens neighborhoods and infrastructure that make Montgomery work.
Reed added, “We have positive momentum in Montgomery, but maintaining that momentum requires discipline and continued investment in the fundamentals. Our responsibility is to use taxpayers’ dollars wisely, provide the services residents expect and make decisions today that put Montgomery in a stronger position tomorrow.”
Community Impact
Local residents can expect the increased funding to translate into faster emergency response times, better‑maintained streets and more reliable city services. The council’s unanimous approval signals broad agreement among elected officials that these investments are essential for the city’s continued growth and quality of life.
With the FY2027 budget now in place, Montgomery’s leadership will focus on implementing the outlined projects and monitoring outcomes to ensure the city remains on a trajectory of improvement.
