San Marcos City Council Approves $750,000 for Vital Human Services Programs

On September 15, the San Marcos City Council took decisive action to support the community’s most pressing needs. Council members approved a $750,000 allocation of Human Services Grant funding, directing the money to 32 nonprofit programs that address hunger, domestic‑abuse recovery, youth development and other high‑priority services.

How the grants were chosen

The Human Services Advisory Board (HSAB), appointed by the council, reviewed 30 applications representing 40 programs and recommended the final list of awardees. Board members followed guidance from the council and incorporated feedback from previous years, focusing on initiatives that would have the greatest impact on the city’s most urgent challenges.

According to the council’s agenda documents, the board identified food‑security programs and services for survivors of domestic abuse as the top priorities for FY 2026‑27. Those two categories received the largest share of the funding, reflecting the council’s commitment to ensuring that families have reliable access to nutritious meals and that victims of abuse receive the support they need to rebuild their lives.

Recipients and past support

Six of the organizations receiving the new grants have also been awarded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for the upcoming year. Those groups include:

  • Hays‑Caldwell Women’s Center
  • CASA of Central Texas, Inc.
  • Blanco River Regional Recovery Team
  • Salvation Army
  • HOME Center
  • Greater San Marcos Youth Council

The continued investment in these nonprofits underscores the council’s confidence in their proven ability to deliver results for the community.

Council member’s perspective

“These are not easy decisions to somehow find ways to allocate to meet all the need when we know the need far outpaces what we have,” said Council Member Amanda Rodriguez. “I’m very proud of our city. I just hope that as we move forward, we really figure out if there are better ways to allocate the money, to also think about applying money to things proactively.”

Rodriguez’s remarks highlight a forward‑looking approach: while the current grants address immediate gaps, the council is already considering how to structure future funding more strategically, potentially expanding proactive investments that prevent crises before they arise.

Where to find more information

All grant applications, award amounts and the full list of funded programs are available in the City Council meeting agenda documents posted on the City of San Marcos website. Residents are encouraged to review the materials to see how local nonprofits are leveraging public resources to strengthen families and uphold community values.

The Human Services Grant program remains a cornerstone of San Marcos’ effort to support traditional families, uphold individual liberty through charitable choice, and foster a thriving, faith‑centered community. By directing resources to food assistance and domestic‑abuse recovery, the council is reinforcing the safety net that keeps families strong and neighborhoods resilient.
