East Village community calls for safety upgrades after teen killed on Citi Bike

East Village residents are urging city officials to act after a tragic collision claimed the life of 15‑year‑old Daria Serkov. The teenager was riding an electric Citi Bike with a friend around 9 p.m. on Friday when a truck turning onto First Avenue from 14th Street struck her bike, sending her to her death.

Community response and memorial

Friends and classmates from the Lab School gathered after school to lay flowers and other tributes at a growing memorial near the crash site. A vigil was held Saturday night, where classmates remembered Serkov as a bright, compassionate presence. “She just brought so much light to everyone around her,” said her teammate Tiegan, who also recalled the soccer goal Serkov scored just days before.

Safety concerns at a busy intersection

The crash has reignited long‑standing worries about traffic safety at the intersection of 14th Street and First Avenue. Transportation Alternatives spokesperson Charlie Baker called the incident “a very, very disturbing trend,” noting that this is the 13th child killed in traffic in New York City this year—twice the number recorded at the same point last year.

Local residents say they have repeatedly raised the issue with city agencies. “We call 311; when there are elections, we always bring it up, and yet nothing ever gets done,” one East Village resident told reporters, reflecting frustration with the perceived inaction.

City officials and next steps

Mayor Eric Adams’ office has not yet issued a formal response, but the Department of Transportation (DOT) has a history of reviewing high‑risk intersections. Advocates are asking for concrete measures such as improved signage, dedicated bike lanes, and better lighting to protect pedestrians and cyclists.

DOT spokesperson Maya Patel said the agency is “reviewing recent crash data” and will consider “engineering solutions” for the 14th Street and First Avenue corridor. She added that any changes will involve community input and a public hearing process.

Impact on the broader safety conversation

The tragedy underscores a larger pattern of child traffic fatalities in the city. According to the NYPD, 13 children have been killed in traffic incidents so far in 2026, a figure double that of the same period last year. Safety advocates argue that this rise signals a need for stronger enforcement of traffic laws and more resources for safe street design.

Transportation Alternatives has called for a citywide audit of high‑risk intersections and the deployment of traffic‑calming measures, such as speed‑reduction bumps and pedestrian‑only phases at traffic signals.

Family’s statement

In a statement released by Serkov’s parents, they expressed profound grief while urging the community to honor Daria’s memory by working toward safer streets. “Our beloved Daria, our Dasha, was full of love, joy, and energy … We will carry her light, her compassion, and the love she gave us in our hearts always,” they wrote.

Ongoing investigation

The truck driver remained at the scene and has not been charged as of Monday. A second girl, 16, who was also riding the bike, was hospitalized but is now reported to be in stable condition. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

As the community mourns, many hope that this heartbreaking loss will catalyze meaningful changes to protect the city’s most vulnerable road users.
