Texarkana, Texas – A new independent bookstore opened its doors on Saturday, bringing a dedicated space for books by Black authors and products made by Black creators to the community. Our Roots & Stories held its grand opening at 10 a.m., featuring a curated selection of over 700 titles spanning romance, young adult, thrillers, children’s literature and more.
Owner’s Vision
Owner Angela Murphy explained that the store was born out of a noticeable gap in local retail: “I was inspired to open this bookstore by the lack of places to get these books by Black authors. I wanted to create a space where people could come in and see themselves represented.” Murphy emphasized that the mission goes beyond selling books. “I want young readers to come in and see books with themselves on the cover. Then hopefully that will foster a love of reading for them,” she said.
Local Focus and Community Support
The shop will feature works from traditionally published authors as well as independent writers, giving local Texarkana authors a platform to reach readers. “Community means everything to me. Everyone is welcome,” Murphy added. “There are authors right here in Texarkana, and I must support them.”
Beyond Books
In addition to literature, the store sells bookmarks, stickers, planners, pens and other items crafted by Black creators. The venue plans to host regular book‑club discussions, author events, signings and even yoga sessions, providing residents with opportunities for fellowship, learning and discovery.
“Our voices matter,” Murphy said. “I feel like there are so many Black creators with beautiful stories to share.” She hopes the bookstore will leave a lasting impression on the community. “I hope they take away that I can do this too. I want them to know there is a place in Texarkana that sees me, sees my culture, and does not frown upon it.”

Our Roots & Stories is located at 3601 N. State Line Ave., Suite 1. Hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday. Updates and event announcements are posted on the store’s Facebook page.
The opening adds a culturally focused retail option to Texarkana’s downtown area, supporting both local entrepreneurship and the broader goal of representation in literature.
