DOJ charges 16 in multi‑state crackdown on illegal voting, highlighting Trump administration’s election integrity push

The Department of Justice unveiled a sweeping enforcement action on Friday, charging 16 individuals in seven states with alleged illegal voting, voter‑registration fraud, and a range of related offenses. The announcement comes as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing effort to protect the integrity of U.S. elections.

Key allegations and locations

According to the DOJ, eight non‑citizens residing in Texas were among those charged. Additional defendants face accusations in Idaho, Georgia, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey and Michigan. The alleged conduct includes non‑citizens casting ballots in federal elections, false claims of U.S. citizenship to register or vote, and false statements on naturalization applications.

In Georgia, the DOJ identified Analiea Milliscent Eccles, a Venezuelan national and DACA recipient, who allegedly voted nine times between 2008 and 2024. In Idaho, Avila Gomez, a Mexican national, is accused of falsely claiming citizenship to register and then voting in the 2022 and 2024 elections. New Jersey resident Santana Coulibaly, a lawful permanent resident, is charged with voting in 2018, 2020 and submitting a provisional ballot in the 2024 presidential race.

Broader enforcement context

Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the DOJ’s Fraud Division told Fox News that the Trump administration has now charged 50 non‑citizens with illegal voting. “America’s elections are for Americans,” McDonald said, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the ballot box.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin added that more than 1,620 open cases are under investigation, resulting in 151 arrests so far. He warned that officials are examining over 300,000 suspected cases, a figure that continues to grow.

Administration’s response

Both the DOJ and DHS framed the crackdown as a necessary warning to anyone attempting to undermine the electoral process. The DOJ’s social‑media post read, “Let this be a warning to ANYONE trying to cheat and undermine our elections. Spread the word!” The administration argues that each illegal vote erodes the voice of a lawful citizen.

Critics have pointed to the large number of investigations as evidence of a broader immigration enforcement agenda. However, the administration maintains that the focus is strictly on protecting the sanctity of the vote, not on targeting any particular community.

Legal presumption

The Justice Department noted that the charges are accusations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

These actions reflect a continued federal priority under President Trump to enforce election laws rigorously, deter fraud, and ensure that only eligible voters participate in the democratic process.
