UTEP Miners Keep Game Tight Against No. 19 Michigan at Halftime

In a spirited contest at Michigan Stadium, the UTEP Miners proved they can compete with a top‑25 opponent. At halftime the Miners trailed No. 19 Michigan by just three points, 17-14, after a balanced first half of scoring and solid ball security.

First‑half highlights

UTEP struck first when quarterback EJ Colson Jr. connected with Carver Cheeks on a 45‑yard touchdown pass, giving the Miners an early 7-0 lead. Michigan answered in the second quarter with a six‑yard rushing touchdown by Savion Hiter, tying the game at 7-7.

Colson continued his efficient play, finding Lamar Sperling for an 18‑yard touchdown pass that restored the Miners’ lead to 14-7. The Wolverines responded quickly, with quarterback Bryce Underwood delivering a touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan, evening the score at 14-14.

With just five seconds left in the half, Michigan edged ahead on a 48‑yard field goal by T.J. Butkowski, sending the teams to the locker room with a 17-14 advantage for the Wolverines.

Statistical snapshot

Colson’s performance has been flawless through two quarters: he completed all six of his pass attempts for 82 yards and two touchdowns, showing poise against a highly ranked defense. Michigan, however, has moved the ball more effectively overall, out‑gaining UTEP 216 yards to 122. The Miners have protected the ball well, committing no turnovers, while Michigan has lost two fumbles.

Looking ahead

UTEP will aim to capitalize on its early momentum in the second half, hoping to reclaim the lead and possibly pull off an upset against a nationally recognized program. The Miners’ disciplined play and efficient passing attack suggest they have the tools to stay competitive.

For fans in Ann Arbor and beyond, the game offers a compelling showcase of college football talent and the promise of an exciting second half. Stay tuned for updates as the Miners strive to close the gap and challenge the Wolverines on their home turf.
