More Than 500 Volunteers Clean Up Sarasota County Beaches in Annual Coastal Event

On Saturday morning, more than 500 volunteers spread across 22 locations in Sarasota County took part in the International Coastal Cleanup, a worldwide effort coordinated locally by Keep Sarasota County Beautiful. Participants gathered at popular spots such as Siesta Key, where they swept sand, streets and parking lots of litter.

Volunteer effort and collected debris

Volunteers reported picking up everyday items like food packaging, bottle caps, drink cups and cigarette butts, as well as a few unexpected finds—a razor, a lone sock and a pair of Crocs. “Everybody loves our beaches, they come here for our beaches,” said Deborah Cooney, public information officer for the City of Sarasota. “So we make an effort to clean them up and help keep them nice.”

Lead volunteer Caren Phillippi noted that about 40 volunteers worked the north side of Siesta Key alone, demonstrating the strong community commitment to keeping the shoreline pristine. Volunteer Gail Farb added that while most of the trash was typical food‑related waste, the odd items highlighted the need for continued vigilance.

Why the cleanup matters

Organizers emphasized that removing litter before it reaches the water is essential for protecting the natural beauty and ecological health of Sarasota’s beaches. The effort aligns with the broader goals of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, which aims to raise awareness about marine pollution and inspire local action.

Cooney stressed that the cleanup is not a one‑time event. “We just want to make sure it’s as beautiful as it can be,” she said, underscoring the ongoing responsibility of residents, visitors and local officials to maintain clean coastlines.

Looking ahead

While officials have not yet released the total weight of debris collected across all sites, the sheer number of volunteers and the variety of items gathered suggest a significant impact. The community’s participation reflects a shared commitment to stewardship of Florida’s Gulf Coast, a value that resonates with families, faith‑based groups and all who cherish the region’s natural resources.

Keep Sarasota County Beautiful plans to continue partnering with the Ocean Conservancy for future cleanups, encouraging more residents to join the cause and help preserve the area’s beaches for generations to come.
