Munich Oktoberfest opens with mayor tapping first keg amid heightened security

Munich’s world‑renowned Oktoberfest began Saturday with a ceremonial tap of the first keg by Mayor Dominik Krause. The mayor performed the traditional two‑stroke pour and shouted the Bavarian cry “O’zapft is” (“It’s been tapped”), signaling the start of the 191st edition of the festival.

Festival atmosphere and traditions

Thousands of revelers streamed onto the Theresienwiese fairground, many dressed in classic Bavarian attire – women in dirndls and men in lederhosen – eager to claim a spot on the benches inside the massive beer tents. Brass bands filled the air with lively tunes while freshly tapped beer flowed, prompting immediate singing, dancing and swaying among the crowds.

Beyond the iconic beer, festivalgoers can enjoy traditional Bavarian fare such as pretzels, pork roast and a variety of sausages. The event, which runs for 16 days through October 4, is expected to draw roughly 6 million visitors, the majority from Munich and southern Germany, with additional guests arriving from other German regions and abroad.

Enhanced security measures

After last year’s temporary closure due to overcrowding, German authorities have implemented stricter security protocols for this year’s celebration. AI‑powered cameras have been installed to detect large crowd formations early, allowing police to intervene before safety thresholds are exceeded, according to the German news agency dpa.

A comprehensive ban on knives and flying objects – notably drones – is in effect. Entry checks now prohibit large bags, and the use of marijuana is expressly forbidden on the festival grounds. Approximately 600 police officers are on duty, supplemented by Bavarian riot police, specialized pickpocket investigators, and international task forces representing eight countries.

Local impact and community spirit

Oktoberfest remains a cornerstone of Munich’s cultural identity and a major economic driver for the city. Local hotels, restaurants and vendors anticipate a surge in business, while the festival provides seasonal employment for thousands of residents. The event also offers a chance for families and friends to gather in a setting that celebrates Bavarian heritage, music, and culinary traditions.

Mayor Krause emphasized the importance of balancing celebration with safety, noting that the new security technologies and coordinated police presence aim to protect both locals and visitors while preserving the festive atmosphere that defines Oktoberfest.

As the festival unfolds over the next two weeks, organizers will continue to monitor crowd density and enforce the established bans, ensuring that Munich’s beloved tradition can be enjoyed responsibly by all who attend.
