San Francisco officials confirmed that a mountain lion was captured on Friday after a tense standoff in the Outer Sunset neighborhood. The animal was first sighted near the intersection of Ulloa Street and 44th Avenue at about 7:30 a.m., prompting a rapid response from San Francisco Animal Care and Control.
Response and containment
Animal control crews arrived on the scene within minutes and began efforts to secure the area. Residents were instructed to remain inside their homes and keep windows and doors closed while the department worked to tranquilize the predator. “You need to disperse, get back in your homes,” a police officer announced over a bullhorn, according to a nearby resident.
After several attempts, the lion was successfully tranquilized about half an hour later. Crews then safely transported the animal to a holding facility for evaluation and eventual release back into a suitable habitat.
Community reaction
Neighbors described the incident as “kind of crazy,” noting the unusual sight of a large wild cat navigating city streets. “We heard the police come out, they had all the bullhorns telling everybody to stay inside,” said resident Shane Jordan. “Within a few minutes we learned that it was a mountain lion running around the neighborhood and so obviously there was a lot of concern.”
The incident has reminded residents of the importance of wildlife awareness, especially in coastal neighborhoods that border natural habitats. Local officials emphasized that the city’s wildlife response protocols are designed to protect both public safety and the well‑being of the animal.
Recent sightings
This is the second mountain lion sighting in San Francisco within two weeks. Earlier in the month, a separate lion was reported perched in a tree in the Panhandle park on September 5. Authorities have not yet determined whether the two incidents involve the same animal.
