In Atlanta, leaders are raising awareness about the often-overlooked issue of human trafficking, which is more prevalent than many realize. At a recent training hosted by Wellspring Living and the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Violence Reduction, attendees learned that trafficking frequently occurs through manipulation and coercion by individuals known to the victims.
Local Efforts to Combat Trafficking
Wellspring Living, an Atlanta-based organization, provides crucial services for survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking. They define human trafficking as the exploitation of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion for labor or commercial sex. Maja Hasic, Anti-Human Trafficking Program Director at Tapestri, highlighted the presence of labor trafficking in unexpected industries, noting that increased training is uncovering more cases across Georgia.
Sarah de Carvalho, CEO of It’s a Penalty, emphasized the global scale of human trafficking, with 50 million people trapped in the industry, a third of whom are children. Atlanta’s underground sex economy was valued at $300 million in 2022, underscoring the local impact of this issue.
Dispelling Myths and Raising Awareness
Speakers at the training sought to dismantle common misconceptions about trafficking, such as the belief that it only involves kidnappings. Dionysia Ambrose from Wellspring Living stressed that trafficking affects people across all demographics and that traffickers target vulnerabilities rather than specific groups or locations.
With the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in Atlanta, there is a heightened focus on preventing trafficking. Marcus Walker from the Mayor’s Office of Violence Reduction warned that major sporting events can increase vulnerabilities that traffickers exploit. Nia Brown from Airbnb and Delta Air Lines are among those advocating for increased awareness and training to combat trafficking during such events.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to report suspicious activity to hotlines and law enforcement, playing a vital role in the fight against human trafficking. Wellspring Living and the City of Atlanta will continue hosting awareness training sessions to further educate the community.
