Indiana Health Officials Urge Residents to Verify Vaccines After 15 Measles Cases Confirmed

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Department of Health is warning residents of Switzerland, Wayne and Parke counties to review their vaccination histories after confirming 15 measles cases so far in 2026. The outbreak underscores the highly contagious nature of the disease, which can spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.

Public‑health officials stress vigilance

Shandy Dearth, director of the Indiana University Center of Public Health Practice, explained that measles can affect anyone, though very young children and seniors are traditionally at higher risk. “Typically, with diseases like this, we say very young children and the elderly are most at risk, but anyone could possibly be at risk from the disease,” Dearth said.

Measles can lead to serious complications, including lung infections and brain swelling. Dearth urged anyone who may have been exposed to monitor themselves closely for early warning signs such as fever, body aches or the characteristic rash that appears after the initial symptoms.

What to do if you think you’ve been exposed

Health officials recommend that anyone who suspects exposure call a doctor right away. Because the virus spreads so easily, individuals without immunity can contract it from someone nearby. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that symptoms typically appear one to two weeks after exposure.

“You need to really make sure that you’re looking at any kind of symptoms around measles,” Dearth added. “This includes a fever, feeling achy, or looking at spots that would eventually appear.” Prompt medical attention can help manage the illness and reduce the risk of severe outcomes.

Why vaccination matters

Vaccination remains the most effective tool for preventing measles. The MMR (measles‑mumps‑rubella) vaccine is widely available and is part of the routine childhood immunization schedule. Residents who are unsure of their vaccination status are encouraged to contact their health care provider or local health department to confirm they are up to date.

Indiana’s health department continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as new information becomes available. Community cooperation in verifying vaccine records and seeking timely medical care is essential to contain the outbreak and protect public health.

Community response

Local schools, churches and community organizations have been asked to share the health advisory with families and members. By working together, Hoosiers can help limit the spread of measles and safeguard the most vulnerable among us.
